I am a little ashamed
So I spent about six hours cutting into the precious and have enough strips to make 25 scrappy tripalong blocks. That means I have 150 different DS fabrics. Ahem. Here is a fairly dreadful and cobbled together photo of all of them on my design wall.
And now I need your help because I am not sure what approach to take with the piecing. My inner obsessive says "keep it rainbowy, stupid" but I am truly, DEEPLY concerned that this will just not work and I should go for a much more random approach. Bear in mind that I don't have more of quite a few of these fabrics, so definitely do not want to stuff this up. Although on the plus side, they do look quite nice just up on the wall like that, so maybe I'll just forego the piecing altogether and leave it as it is. Your opinions please!

I have no opinion but I do love looking at that photo, it's lush! x
ReplyDeleteSat here sick with jealousy because I only have less than 50 DS prints, and then thought how ridiculous I was because having almost 50 of any one designer is a lot of fabric and I need to get a grip. I vote against rainbow. You want a more scrappy look with these blocks and I think all the prints will shine more if they are contrasting with the ones they are beside rather than in a regimented order.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Susan, too rainbow and you'll lose the individual, beautiful fabrics, go scrappy! : )
ReplyDeleteI am one of those regimented individuals who is scared of the randomness of scrappiness so I vote rainbow - it can still be scrappy-looking because you have so many different prints, but if each block has a rainbow sequence I think that would look lovely. Test blocks maybe?
ReplyDeleteLOL! I knew you would cave eventually.
ReplyDeleteRight, having MUCHOS experience making these blocks... (all 36 of them!) I would say do not go rainbow. Separate them into lights and darks, and try to pick 3 from each pile when putting blocks together. The only thing I kept saying to myself when making the blocks was "high contrast".
Or jack the whole idea in and make a strip quilt, because they're super pretty like that!
thanks lovely, I shall bow to your greater experience (although it may kill me!)
DeleteI'm no expert but I vote scrappy too :) With fabrics that beautiful I don't think you can go wrong......!!!! x
ReplyDeleteDefinitely scrappy, much more dramatic looking at the examples I've seen on the Scrap Trip Along Flickr Group photos. Lots of contrast of light and dark. Blue is Bleu has a good idea to put the darkest fabric down the centre of each block and to include yellow in every block too.
ReplyDeleteooh, that's a good idea! Thanks :-D
DeleteTime to let go of your obsessive need for colour order ;-)
ReplyDeleteYou're a bugger, because I've decided to make just one block. And see how it goes. Just one. *Sigh* On that note, and looking at the completed blocks on the flickr group, I'd definitely leave it scrappy, mix those colours. If you did then decide to increase the quilt size but ran out of DS fabric, it wouldn't be such a disaster. Mix mix mix mix.....
ReplyDeleteWow, all those DS fabrics! I'm a big fan too, but have no idea how many I have (now I'll just have to count them this evening, thanks a lot). I vote for scrappy too, I'm sure that will look fab. If you can't let go of your obsession, choose a different design for these beauties and pick completely random fabrics for the scrappy quilt.
ReplyDeleteHaving just made 36 blocks I have to say, go random, go scrappy :o) It is hard to do but believe me it is worth it in the end. I blogged my finish yesterday and spoke briefly about how hard it was to go random and how I wanted to do rainbow. Just think contrast and your blocks will shine when they are all together. Remember, have fun :o)
ReplyDeleteWiping keyboard down, here. They look so good! I agree with Laura, go for contrast and keep it random, IMHO.
ReplyDeletei think i only own 150 prints all together in my stash, but here you own a 150 prints from DS alone? wowzers.
ReplyDeletemaybe you could get more ds prints from your friends/fans/readers? unless you already own all of her prints.
I've also gone for the darkest value fabric in each block down the middle and I'd second Laura's suggestion of high contrast. I've done 12 blocks so far and the ones I like least are the ones with the least contrast within them.
ReplyDeleteI think I'd go scrappy but with a few rules...darkest pieces down the diagonal and contrast in each strip set, perhaps? Having said that, they look gorgeous as strips so you could sew them together like that...
ReplyDeleteI vote scrappy!
ReplyDeleteI found a picture on flickr of what it looks like when you do rainbow order: http://www.flickr.com/photos/schnitzelandboo/8350058109/in/pool-scrappytripalong
ReplyDeleteHopefully that helps with your decision!
I like the rainbow idea. But don't listen to me coz I'm not into scrappy. I like seeing what others do but I'll never make one myself - they hurt my brain :)
ReplyDelete150?! Holy crap! Rainbow it :oD
ReplyDeleteNo to the rainbow!
ReplyDeleteI laid all mine out and put them in colour order and started selecting 6 by picking every 6th one etc and it was a blinking nightmare, so I just went wild and made sure I had no repeats in a single block (not that you have to worry)- it's DS, it will look lovely!
Random would look beautiful. I don't think that you should do a rainbow within each block, it will be too contrived. I do think it might be interesting to grab the fabrics in the order you have them, so they're pieced in groups of colors. You could arrange the blocks so there's a gentle wash oF color across the quilt. I haven't seen someone do that before, so I'm not sure how it would work. You'd have to be brave. :)
ReplyDeleteGood luck with your decision
Fabulous collection of strips!
ReplyDeleteooo!! How about a rainbowy center that scatters and mixes up throughout the quilt? luscious!
ReplyDeletehaha, I've got a collection building as well, but have to admit I'd love to have as many as you have. I've used so many already and wish I still had some left over. You can never have too many DS Quilt fabric!
ReplyDeleteWhatever you do its going to be amazing, how could it no it be with that incredible collection of ds fabric. I'd go with random myself.
ReplyDeleteFun! I'm loving these fabrics. It's so making me want to join in :-)
